Rampage and Devon Balet
So Rampage was insane, Zink showed everybody what's up with a massive opposite 3 off of the Oakley Icon Sender. Micah and I were fortunate enough to get trapped on the top of the course do to the weather delay. Needless to say, hanging out on top of the Rampage course with the best riders in the world was pretty cool. I won't bother posting links to Rampage vids/pics as Pinkbike and Vital are flooded with them.
I figured I'd use this post to bring attention to photog Devon Balet. Devon has been shooting with us a bunch recently so stay posted for eye candy. Expect to see him hanging out riding with us and around at events such as Huktoberfest. I'll try and post pictures of Rampage here for him when he is ready to post them up. For some current photos though check out his site.

Grassroots Race Team @ Winter Park
A few of the last standing Grassroots racers went up to Winter Park for the last Gravity race of the Mountain States Cup Race Season. Pete Knepper, Kazzy Saito, & I (Eric Landis) made the trip and got 3 days of great riding over the Labor Day Holiday Weeekend. Noah Sears with MRP also traveled with us and is a virtual local to the Winter Park Resort. He is always great company and an even better tour guide on a mountain I had never ridden before.
Things Kicked off Saturday with Dual Slalom. The course was pretty short and not too technical so the start was very important. Once on course attacking the gates was key and being careful on the hard packed, slick soil.
Kazzy is always a factor in the Cat2 30+ class and showed well. I heard his name announced multiple times over the course of the competition and finished well in a large class in 8th.
I had a great qualifying run and to my surprise was in 2nd place in Mens Pro right behind Chris Boice a factory supported rider going into the finals. I ended up going up against Michael Buell and kept him honest but he knocked me out for a 5th place finish.
Down Hill Was not until Monday so we all had a play/practice day on Sunday. We walked and rode the DH race course in the morning then got to go for some play runs on some of the amazingly long & large and well built runs. Noah Sears with MRP put together this great video of some of the action:
Monday for the actual down hill race was pretty cold. It caught a few of us by surprise and the cold air actually affected breathing and even our hands. I started first with my qualifying run that went pretty well. There were rumors of the pros running chainless but I decided to run with chain on to see what I could do so I could compare times with my teammate Pete Knepper. I qualified in 5th and felt pretty good with a 6:45.
Kazzy went next and with a good run he finished in the middle of a stacked field in 11th.
Pete dropped in and went for it. This was an extremely physical course and was difficult to ride the whole thing linked together. Pete had been killing all the most difficult lines in practice and even did a scary rock double I was afraid to try and never did do. I knew he would do well no matter what and he came across the line strong with a 3rd place finish in Cat1 19-29 with a 6:52.
In my finals all of the Pros did decide to go chainless and it was a very fun and relaxed atmosphere at the top. Usually the Pro staging is super stiff and a little umcomfortable with the competition in the air but this time everyone was joking around and were pretty loose. They even made a unofficial rule that you could not "run start" & only push out of the gate twice. I kind of felt dumb but I gave my 2 best pushes and rolled slowely into the first drop feature. I almost endoed trying to pump it too hard but was on my way. I obviously had to focus on not braking and keeping my momentum by pumping the terrain and staying low to avoid wind resistance.
As I went down I was surprised how fast I was able to go even with out pedaling. I was even more surprised to find how hard it was physically. I was worked! My whole body and especially my leggs could not hardly hold me up from crouching and pumping every little bump. I came across the line with a 6:52 putting me in 9th place, my 2nd top 10 of the year in DH. It felt great and I could not believe I was only 7 seconds slower than my mad pedaling run. I learned a ton about what I can do besides pedaling to go fast & I look forward to the next race.

Full Tilt in Telluride Race Report By Pete Knepper
Well, to everyone's delight, the weather held out. It didn't rain a drop until the entire race was over. If you had ridden the world cup course prior to this weekend, you hadn't ridden the good world cup course. A lot of work was put into the course the week before and after 3000+ tires rolled down it in practice, it was buffed out and ready for some balls to the wall race runs. It was a pretty short course with the top pro time being 2:42 by Chris Boice.
Mike Zeek and I were the only ones from Grassroots in attendance and this was Mike's first race all year and almost his first time on DH bike all year.
Here I am ripping one of the many solid berms up top. This is the first race where I really started to learn to trust the berms and let it fly.
For being his first time racing this year, Mike was throwing down. With some more practice he stands a good chance of being on the podium next year in CAT 1. Unfortunately in his race run, he managed to go O.T.B. in a rock garden up top which put him in last place. Luckily he wasn't hurt and managed to do a fun run with me after the race.
Here's Mike and I celebrating after my HUGE win. I bought a few beers for everyone before I realized they would give them to me for free for wearing my gold medal! I was on cloud nine for 2 days after the race because I threw down a 2:53, beating all of the CAT 1's, making my time good enough for 10th in Pro, and beating Michael Buel (Factory Banshee Team)!
This was the best race of my life and I couldn't have done it without encouragement and help from my friends, Grassroots Cycles, Canfield Brothers ,and James Wilson at MTB Strength Training Systems.
After this Race, Grassroots Cycles as a team is in 4th place in the Mountain States Cup. If we get a decent showing at Winter Park in two weeks, we could move up a place or two for the final! Dust those bikes off Roots Riders, lets finish strong!

Ranchstyle 2 time winner takes 3rd at Crankworx in Whistler!!!
Top Zink throwing a 3 of the monster drop, Casey's tailwhip below!
Congrats go out to Casey Groves on his 3rd place finish at Crankworx in Whistler BC. He threw down!! Props of course to Cam Zink and Mike Montgomery on their 1st and 2nd place finishes as well!! We were a little nervous for Casey when he kicked this tailwhip off the drop that sould really only be sent on a Huck bike, but he stomped it with authority!! Super sick riding, and wishes for a quick recovery for Barrecloth and Semenuk and all other fallen shredders...

Resort Report from 7/25
Made it up to Keystone yesterday and the trails are ripping right now. Check out the trail map of the bike park.
The map has good descriptions of the trails, the newest of which is Logger's Way. They describe it as fast and flowy single track. It's wider then single track but very fast and flowy.
While only a blue this trail is very smooth and full of big tables and sweeping burms, definitely my new favorite. Expect to pin it faster then you have in a while.
Most of us are still doing resorts on Sunday, James and friends went up to Vail. So if you wanna ride, hit us up. Somebody will most likely be going to one of the many resorts.

Took the kids to the Ranch
So I went up to the Ranch with Johny and Travis to get some pics of them on their new bikes. For those who don't know the deal with these two, they are recent 20" converts that are now riding for the shop.
They were both getting comfortable with tricks on the bigger bikes and then started working on the slope course.
Sorry for the picture heavy post.

Epic 5000' vertical decent
Amy Knepper and I (Pete Knepper) headed down to Telluride for the July 4th Celebration. We met up with Dan Sharp, Erin Borg, Dan Goss, Gary Die (spelling??), and Jackie and Dante Harmony for a shuttle run down Imogene pass into Ouray. We shuttled up from the Telluride side in this guy Rick's old F-150 while simultaneously killing a 30-pack of PBR. That combined with the lack of oxygen up there kept everyone a little timid for a while. When we got to the top of the road, Jackie, Dante, and myself hiked to the top of the top to do a little free riding down the loose rocks and snow.
The weather was awesome and it was a ride like I've never done before. The feeling of being at 13,000'+ with only your bike and knowing there is only one way to go is pretty damn cool. In the end, no one got hurt, didn't have any mechanicals, and we all had a killer 4th. If you ever have a chance to do some downhilling/freeriding of this nature, don't think twice about it, just do it!
